Frequently asked questions

Here, you may find answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Occupational Therapists define Occupation as all of the meaningful things someone does in their day like school/work, play/leisure and looking after themselves and their home. We work with individuals, their family and care team to understand what is meaningful for them and what their current difficulties are. We then help to develop and prioritise personal goals to live a good life as independently as possible.

Occupational Therapy focuses specifically on the practical aspects of day to day living. This may be through teaching or retraining skills or changing the way you complete a task which may include using assistive technology. Specific examples include:

  • Developing fine motor skills to improve handwriting
  • Helping to develop daily routines
  • Practicing daily living skills such as dressing, cooking or shopping
  • Developing care plans for Support Workers to follow
  • Using mindfulness techniques to manage stress in daily life
  • Making a plan to live independently including assisting with housing applications where appropriate.
  • Requesting funding for assistive technology to support your independence.
From time to time the NDIS request a Functional Assessment report. For most people this will be every two years or when your circumstances change. The Occupational Therapist will follow their usual assessment and provide a comprehensive report for you explaining to NDIS how your disability impacts your day to day life, your goals for the future and the supports you will need to achieve your goals.
Our experienced Occupational Therapists have a good understanding of a wide range of disabilities and health conditions and their impacts. When working with you we look beyond your physical abilities. We have a solid understanding of the impacts of intellectual and psychosocial disability including the impact of trauma and work with you to promote recovery.
Unfortunately at this time we are unable to assist with complex home modifications but check in with us from time to time as this is a service we would like to offer in the future.
At Do, Be, Become we work with people of all ages so there is no need to change providers just because you have a birthday.
